SUCCESSFUL YOUNG CYCLISTS
Young cyclists who have received Wal Smith Cycling Scholarships are achieving outstanding results:
Mollie Opperman – Mount Gambier
Mollie has represented her club with real distinction at the South Australian Track Titles:
Under 11 Division
1st Scratch Race
1st Points Race
1st Time Trial
1st Individual Pursuit
Mollie has also done exceptionally well in the Inter Club Road events until the program was halted by the COVID 19 shutdown.
Tess Wight – Mount Gambier
Tess is accumulating a very impressive CV at all cycling levels, her most recent performances were:
2019 Australian Road Titles (Queensland)
3rd U17W Road Race
4th U17W Time Trial
2020 SA Track Titles
1st U17W IP.
Tess has also been classified by Cycling Australia as an Emerging Cyclist which qualifies her for a SASI Scholarship for 2020/21.
The Wight family are certainly making their mark in the cycling world with Tess’ brother putting up some excellent rides and gaining National selection.
Cadel Howie – Port Fairy
Cadel is now a member of the South West Academy of Sport and is being coached by Kez King from Royal Bikes. Cadel has racked up some very special performances at State level in a very competitive group. Cadel in the Victorian Junior Tour events 2019 was placed 3rd overall for the series – an exceptional result.
He has also been putting in some really sizzling performances in the Southwest Inter Club races and holds the Port Fairy Junior Club Championship.
Eddie Worral
Eddie is certainly a young man on a mission. He has represented Victoria at Australian Road Championships and was selected in the Track Team this year after some well-deserved medals at state level. The titles were suspended due to the virus situation. That would have been incredible experience for Eddie who undoubtedly would have done very well.
The Foundation congratulates all these young cyclists and indeed all young riders in the clubs of the South West Inter Club competition.
We are very impressed that all these young Champions are using the present “down time” from upper level cycling to hone their skills even further.
Good luck to all cyclists and their families and stay safe.
